It’s that time of the year again when you should expect a W2 Form from your employer.
From how much you earned to how much you paid in state and federal taxes throughout the year, a W2 form provides the IRS essential information for calculating the taxes you owe.
Employers must issue W2 forms on or before January 31st, 2020. In turn, you should receive your W2 by mid-February at the latest.
What Should I Do If I Haven’t Received My W2?
Ask Your Employer
First, you should confirm with your employer that they gave it to you on-site or mailed it to the right address. If you don’t want to wait for the mail, you can ask for a copy at your place of business.
Reach Out To The IRS
If you still haven’t gotten your W2 by February 15, you should contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 so they can request a W2 from your employer on your behalf. Upon calling, you must provide identifying information including your name, address, Social Security Number, and phone number. You must also supply details about your employment, including your employer’s name, address, phone number, your dates of employment, and an estimate of the federal income tax withheld from your earned income.
Even without a Form W2, you must file your tax return or request an extension by April 15, 2020. You should use Form 4852 Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement. Your last pay stub for the tax year should help you estimate the necessary figures. Note that the IRS may delay refunds while they verify your information.
Don’t worry if your estimates are off. When you receive your W2, you can correct any disparities by filling out a Form 1040X Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
